January Review + February Goals

Goals Review

We’re nearing the end of January, so I thought it would be a good time to reflect on how I’m doing with my 2015 goals so far. In general, I’d say that I’m doing decently well with some and not as great with others. Some might find this discouraging, but I say it’s the nature of the beast.

Here are the things I’m doing well at:

  1. Waking up by 6:00-6:30. I’d be lying if I didn’t say this one is probably the toughest goal that I’ve set. Maybe ever. I seriously hate getting out of bed in the morning, and it’s been quite a struggle. However, there have been two instances where I’ve slept well past the 6:00-6:30 goal, and it’s had a tremendous, negative effect on my day. I’m going to keep this one up, but I’d say that we have a love/hate relationship at this time.
  2. Blogging 2x per week. I had to make 3 posts one week to make up for missing a post the week before, but I’ve met the monthly number. In my mind, that totally counts. I only made 4 posts in January of last year, so the fact that this is my 9th post for the month feels like a huge accomplishment…that’s more than double! I attribute a lot of the success so far to having a good deal of help from my assistants. (Thanks, girls…you’re the best!!) I can’t wait to see how this plays out as my work schedule fills up, but we’re headed in the right direction for now.
  3. Monthly quality time days with Matthew. I marked this one off too! I can already see that the first half of the month is going to fly by, and we’ll likely be squeezing this time in at the end of each month. However, the purpose of this goal is to make the time happen, so as long as I can mark this off by the end of each month, I’ll be happy.
  4. Host a party. I wouldn’t exactly count this as a party, but I did have some friends over for my birthday. Since the big goal here is to spend time with the people I love, I’m counting this as a party…and filling in a bubble on my goal sheet. 🙂
  5. Replacing mediocre things. I wouldn’t say that I did anything major towards this goal. However, I did make a pretty big step for myself. Hold on to your seats…this is a big one – I replaced the hand soap in our bathroom. Riveting, I know! On a serious note though, I was forcing myself to finish this bottle before buying a new one. The bottle was old and dingy. The nozzle was nearly clogged, and I didn’t like the texture or smell of the soap. The worst part was, it always seemed to leave little specks behind in the sink, so I was constantly having to clean the sink after washing my hands…so counterproductive! Nonetheless, it was still an unfinished bottle of soap, so I figured I needed to finish it before buying a new bottle. Not true. I threw this disgusting nuisance away and replaced it with a fresh, new bottle that smells lovely and doesn’t make a huge mess. One small step for mankind, one giant step for me!

While I did made some progress towards these five things, I didn’t do so well at working out regularly, random acts of kindness, or volunteering. Some of these are more annual or quarterly goals though, so I’m not too discouraged. Regardless, I feel like this month was pretty successful, and I’m excited to keep working towards all of these goals.

As we wrap up January, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do in February. Honestly, I struggled to set goals for February. For some reason, I just couldn’t really wrap my head around what I wanted to do. Finally, I settled on a few simple goals for the month.

  1. Leave with at least 3 big things (but no more than 5) from Family Reunion 2015. Family Reunion is the big, annual conference for Keller Williams. Agents from all over the world come together for a jam-packed week of training, networking, and planning. It’s nothing less than overwhelming. Since I tend to want to do all things at once, I hope to pick just 3-5 things from the conference that I want to implement in my business this year.
  2. Actually celebrate Valentine’s Day. Since we’ve been married, Matthew and I have never really celebrated Valentine’s Day. Honestly, I’ve always thought it was a pretty dumb holiday. This year, though, I’d like to make a little bigger deal of it. I think Matthew and I will do something special! (Side note: I can totally count whatever we do as a QT day and mark it on my sheet!)
  3. Hang at least 3 things on the walls. You’ve seen this pop up on several of my monthly goals lists. I have made a tiny, little bit of progress, but not near as much as I’d like. If I were being completely honest, I’d say that I struggle with just doing things. Instead, I have to plan everything out perfectly first. This is especially true for putting holes in my new walls. (Read: On Waiting for Perfection if you don’t believe me.) However, I’m growing a bit tired of bare walls. This month, I’m hanging some things. Period!

We still have hundreds of days left in 2015, and there’s plenty of time to work towards whatever dreams you may have. 2015 Goals

Today's GoalsIt’s that time of year again….the time to set goals for the upcoming year. Once upon a time, I had a serious problem with setting “new year’s resolutions.” I talked about that a bit in last year’s goal post. As a matter of a fact, I still don’t like that term. However, I do like setting goals. 2014 was a big year for goal setting for me. I set several goals for the year. I even ended up setting goals for the month, for the last part of the year. What I learned from my obsessive goal setting in 2014 is that I love setting goals. Turns out, I respond really well when I set realistic and manageable goals for myself. I quickly learned that making these goals public gives me just the push I need to actually make big things happen. In thinking about what my goals would be for 2015, I knew that I’d end up sharing them here with you.

I actually started lining out my 2015 goals in October. Yes, that’s a tad crazy. Nonetheless, I was getting very excited about wrapping up 2014. There’s just something about the fresh start that a new year brings that gets me excited! I started getting a little carried away (too many goals), so I spent quite a bit of time trying to narrow them down and make them more realistic and specific. Remember, a good goal must be realistic and attainable. Setting a million goals for one year was neither of those things, so I had to force myself to pare themdown a bit. I decided to approach goal setting a tad differently this year, so I broke my goals down into three different categories: personal, business, and home.

Without further adieu, here are my personal goals for the year:

  1. Maintain a regular fitness plan. – My goals is to do something active at least three times per week.
  2. Be up by 6:00-6:30 every weekday morning. – I’ve never been accused of being a morning person. I tend to wake up just in time to get dressed and make it to where I need to be. (I literally count this down to the second sometimes.) Instead, I’d like to be up early enough to have a few minutes of quiet time (sipping coffee of course) before starting the madness of my day. I might have to increase my coffee intake a bit.
  3. Blog 2x per week. – This was one of my goals for 2014 too. While I didn’t quite make it, I did definitely feel like I improved on posting regularly here. I’m going to do even better this year! (Fun fact: I made 50 posts in 2014. Doesn’t that seem wild??!)
  4. Have monthly quality time days with Matthew. – We’re busy people. Sometimes finding time to really spend together is tough. I didn’t want to say “date nights” here, because some of my favorite times together are days that we take off and do something special during the day. The goals here is to be sure we disregard everything else and actually spend time together at least once a month this year.
  5. Complete three random acts of kindness per month. – Last year, I wanted to say more nice things. I definitely did better at this, but sometimes I’d forget. Life gets busy and it’s sooo easy to forget to do little things like this. This year, I want to continue trying to say nice things, as well as doing other random acts of kindness. I hope to do this at least three times per month.
  6. Volunteer 4x. – I love to help people. Sometimes that’s actually a flaw of mine…I get too involved. However, my good intentions sometime get the best of me and I don’t actually make it to helping out causes that I care about. This year, I want to be sure to volunteer my time at least four times throughout the year. Four doesn’t sound like a big number, but I know that a quarter of the year will pass before I know it, so I’ll have to be very diligent on this one.
  7. Host at least two parties/events. – There were several times throughout this last year that Matthew and I would run into old friends. I felt like we were constantly saying “we should get together soon,” and yet not actually doing it. This year, I want to be sure to host people at our home at least twice. These can be big or small gatherings…I just want to be sure to focus on spending time with thepeople we love.
  8. Replace 3 mediocre things with 3 beautiful things. – I talked about living a beautiful life before. I’ve been working hard to put an emphasis on surrounding myself with things that I love, but it’s a daily battle. This year, I hope to replace at least three things we don’t love with things that we do…big or small.

Make29 ProductAmanda  and I starting meeting in late October/early November to talk about goals for 2015. (We had regular goal tracking meetings in 2014 but sort of dropped off later in the year.) We agreed that we needed some sort of way to track our progress this year since we both love that feeling of marking something off a list. We decided that we’d create some sort of spreadsheet to track things quarterly and then meet back up to talk strategy. Then something magical happened. Elise released her December Make29 product.

I follow Elise’s blog religiously, and I think she might be the master at getting things done. (She’s releasing a Getting Things Done workbook/calendar later this year and I can’t wait to see it!) As I looked over her December product, I realized that this was exactly what I needed to track my goals for this year. As soon as it was available, I purchased the PDF and began printing sheets for each of the items that I wanted to track. I knew that I might get a little carried away (with too many sheets tracking too many things), so I decided to combine some of the smaller, more yearly items on one sheet. For example, I have just one sheet for all of my home goals. (More on that later.) If you’re looking for a way to track your goal progress in 2015, I highly recommend purchasing this file. It’s a mere $4 to get an instant download that you can print as many times as you need.

I ended up with eight sheets tracking some of my personal, home, and business goals. I envision these being marked up, tattered, and stained (most likely with coffee) by the end of the year, and if that’s the case, I’ll be thrilled. I love how these trackers focus on the big picture. You can miss days here and there. Not every circle has to be filled. Instead, the goal is to see that you have 365 days to work towards something. If you fill in even half of the circles, that would be an amazing accomplishment! If you feel overwhelmed by goal setting, pick a few simple goals, purchase these sheets, and then begin chipping away at it one little bubble at a time.

It’s not too late to set a few simple goals for this new year. After all, it doesn’tmatter when you start working towards something….it only matters that you do start. December Goals

December GoalsWell, here we are! It’s the final month of 2014, and it just so happens to be one of my favorite times of the year! If you’re like me, you can hardly believe that it’s December, because it literally feels like this year just began. Nonetheless, December is here, and I’m ready to have all of the Christmas fun! Before I talk about my goals for this month, let’s review what I accomplished last month.

November’s goals were to:

  1. Purchase five Christmas presents. – Check! Actually, I bought more than five by November’s end and I don’t have many left to get!
  2. Spend a week in Nashville while working as little as possible. – Check! Well, except for that part about not working. There were a couple of issues that I had to handle from afar. However, I learned a valuable lesson this time. I need to be sure other people handle their business before I leave. Most of the issues that arose on this trip were due to someone else not handling their tasks in a timely manner. Next time I plan to go out of town, I’ll work harder to encourage others to take care of things before I leave. Nonetheless, we had a great time! (Read a little about our trip here. More to come later!
  3. Find a coffee to brew at home. – Check! I’m doing great at this! I’m still experimenting (and learning), but I’ve found a couple of creamers that I really like. I’m pleased with my progress.
  4. Review my 2014 goals. – I mentioned that I’d probably move this one to December, and I did. There was just no time for goal review in November!
  5. Finalize 2015 goals.- I wouldn’t say that these are finalized, but I did make some progress on deciding which would stay and go. I’ll continue to work on this in December.
  6. Enjoy this season. – Check! I’m happy that I gave myself a bit of a break in November. I enjoyed Thanksgiving dinners with family and prepping for the Christmas season. It’s funny though…even with less stringent goals for November, I still got a lot done!

After looking through these goals and planning for December, I decided to make most of December’s goals revolve around the Christmas season. I’m already booked up for most of the weekends in December (and lots of weekdays), so my main goal is going to be being present at all of these parties and events. This is a lovely time of year, and I want to enjoy it! Without further ado, here are my goals for the month of December:

  1. Put up two Christmas trees. I’ve had two Christmas trees for the last two years, and I’ve love it! This may prove to be a little more difficult than planned because the legs to one of my trees seem to be missing. However, I think Amanda has saved the day!
  2. Host two Christmas events at our house. We have two events already on the calendar, so this shouldn’t be a problem. I’m excited to host events at our new house!
  3. Attend at least one public Christmas event. There are a ton of great holiday events around Monroe-West Monroe, and I want to make it a point to attend at least one of them. With so many private parties and family events, this might be a little tough. In an ideal world, I’d go to every single Christmas event, but I know that won’t be possible. Instead, I made my goal a little more realistic…I want to attend at least one. (But the more the merrier, of course!)
  4. Watch two Christmas movies. We kicked this plan off by watching Elf over Thanksgiving weekend. I just couldn’t wait to get started! It’s likely that we’ll watch way more than two holiday movies, but with such a busy schedule, I didn’t want to push it. Home Alone is my next pick. What holiday movies are you hoping to see??
  5. Finalize 2015 goals. Enough with the fun stuff. It’s time to handle up on my 2015 goals. I plan to make the final list and create quarterly tracking sheets for monitoring my progress throughout the year. Can you tell that I take goal setting pretty seriously?? I even ordered this shirt from Duck & Dressing this morning. Too funny! Side note: They’re having a pretty awesome Cyber Monday sale…you should check it out!
  6. Review 2014 goals. Obviously, I’m bringing this over from last month. I mentioned before that I’m pretty much over 2014 goals. I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this, but I do want to spend a few minutes looking back over what I wanted to accomplish and how I did. I’ll be making time for that this month.

November Goals

November goalsFor the past two months, I’ve posted monthly goals here on the blog and I’ve had a ton of success with accomplishing things once I’ve shared them here with you. This month, I am simply thrilled to announce that I accomplished EVERY SINGLE ONE of my October goals!! If you’re not jumping up and down with me right now, then apparently we’re not really friends. I am seriously so pumped to be able to say that I got all of these things done (or at least mostly done) last month. Here’s a quick review:

  1. Put up fall/Halloween decor. Check!
  2. Host a Halloween party. Check!!
  3. Begin using the master bath. This barely happened, but I took my first bath in our bathroom this morning!
  4. Empty every box in the dining room. Done! And I think I should get to take the rest of the year off just for accomplishing this one.
  5. Bring the dining table in from storage. Check! (I don’t like it in the room like I thought I would, but it’ll do for now.)
  6. Do something with the boxes in the foyer. The stuff from these boxes doesn’t really have a permanent home, but the boxes are no longer there. I call that a win!
  7. Finish all kitchen boxes. There may be a few things in random cabinets, but there are no more boxes in the kitchen! Another win!
  8. Put down another rug. Done! I’m still in the market for a new living room rug. Send the fabulous ones my way!

As I began thinking about November goals, I realized that I didn’t really want to set too many goals for this month. Instead, I really wanted to focus on being in the moment. I love the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons, so I shift into holiday mode as soon as November rolls around. I set a few small goals for the month, but my main goal is to attend all of the events and spend all of the time possible with family and friends. Besides drinking coffee and wearing sweaters, here’s what I’m hoping to do this month:

  1. Purchase five Christmas presents. Honestly, I should have more than five bought by the end of the month, but like I said above, I’m planning to take it easy on myself this month.
  2. Spend a week in Nashville while working as little as possible. The beauty of my business is that it can be done from practically anywhere. That can sometimes be a negative as it’s hard to get away and take a break. This will take a lot of pre-planning on my part and help from my coworkers, but I’m hoping to leave for a few days while my business keeps rolling along here.
  3. Find a coffee to brew at home. I haven’t talked much about my relationship with coffee here on the blog yet, but it’s coming. I’m a relatively new coffee drinker, and I can’t really make my own coffee to suit my taste. I’m going to be on a mission this month to make a coffee at home that I’ll actually drink. Wish me luck!
  4. Review my 2014 goals. I may end up pushing this one to December, but at some point, I’d like to spend a little bit of time looking back over what I wanted to accomplish this year.
  5. Finalize 2015 goals. Now this is one I’m excited about! I started working on my list in October, and I’ve actually already started working towards some of them. This is partially why I’m kind of over 2014 goals, but that’s ok. This month, I plan to decide which goals get to stay and which will go for 2015. It’s right around the corner, you know?!
  6. Enjoy this season. If you notice, none of this month’s goals are really house focused, which is quite the opposite of September and October. In last week’s post, I mentioned that I felt like I had finally hit a point where I could take a break and relax a little. Things felt ok around the house. While I’ll definitely continue to work on the house here and there, I plan to give myself a break. This month, I want to focus on making some memories and enjoying this lovely time of year. Who’s with me??

October Goals

October Goals (2)Somehow I went to sleep one day in September and woke up to October 1st! I don’t know how it got here, but it’s October now and I’m excited about it. The weather was nice and cool in Louisiana for the beginning of October and it just felt right.

September pretty much flew by, so when I looked at my September goals, I realized I didn’t quite accomplish as much as I’d hoped. If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t really accomplish most of them until October 5…when I sat down to write this post to be exact. You appreciate my honesty, right??

My full disclosure above brings me to a couple of thoughts. First, sharing my September goals was a good thing because even though I didn’t accomplish most of those things in September, I knocked them out quickly when I realized I was going to have to report back to you guys this month.

Secondly, the timeline doesn’t really matter than much. I could easily have gotten discouraged because I didn’t accomplish everything in the time-frame I set for myself. However, the important part is that it still got done! Have you dropped the ball on something lately? Don’t fret. Get back on that horse and knock it out! (Not the horse, of course.) How you get to the finish line really doesn’t matter that much. The finished product is what counts, so set aside your frustrations or failed attempts and mark that item off your list!

Here’s what I accomplished from my September goals (even if I did some of it in October):

  1. Closet: Lots of progress! It’s not a finished project, but we’re getting there.
  2. Kitchen: Most of the boxes are unpacked, and we’ve cooked several meals in there. We still have approximately 5-8 boxes left to handle.
  3. Unpack major boxes: I have certainly made a dent in the boxes. Our bedroom is clear of anything that doesn’t belong in there, and most of the dining room boxes have been emptied. Progress feels good!
  4. Garage sale: Didn’t quite make it to this one. The new goal is October 18. (That’s my only free Saturday in October.)
  5. Hang 5 things on the walls: We hung the first items on the wall on October 5. I’m totally counting that as a win!
  6. Using the master bath: Didn’t quite make this one either but once we get the shower curtain up, we’ll be almost ready!
  7. Settle on living room furniture placement: Is this even possible?? I’ve moved the couch 4 times. It’s staying where it is for now, so I’ll mark this one as a win too.
  8. Purchase a shower curtain: It’s not the Anthro ship curtain that I’m drooling over, but I ordered one that’ll do for the hall bath…..on October 4.
  9. Halloween party: We are having a small party, so I can mark this one off too!

BedroomSince blogging my September goals helped me get so much done, I’m going to try it again for October. This month I hope to:

  1. Put up fall/Halloween decor.
  2. Host a Halloween party.
  3. Begin using the master bath. (Let’s see if this one gets marked off on round two.)
  4. Empty every box in the dining room. (This is a big one!)
  5. Bring the dining table in from storage.
  6. Do something with the boxes in the foyer. (Most of the boxes are photo albums and keepsake-type items. It’s time to get serious about what “stuff” I keep in this house and decide what should get to stay. Even if these boxes aren’t emptied this month, I’d like them tucked away somewhere other than our entry way.)
  7. Finish all kitchen boxes.
  8. Put down another rug. (I don’t even care where it goes…I just want rugs on the floor!)

So there you have it! I’m determined to get this house in order. I’m also determined to not keep any of the extra stuff that we don’t really need. I’m ready to have free time instead of always having a house to work on. It’s time to make that dream a reality!

Hello, September.

Hello, SeptemberI think September is quite possibly my favorite month of the year. (Full disclosure: I will likely say that for other months too.) I think that I love September because I feel like fall is just around the corner. Temperatures start to cool off but it’s still warm (especially in Louisiana). I feel like it’s time to pull out all of my fall attire and start getting ready for the fall holidays. I want to wear boots and sweaters and oversized hoodies. 

This September, I’m thrilled to be in a new house. Even though I’m still unpacking and decorating, I can’t help but begin to think about Halloween decorations. I’m excited about decorating for the holidays that are ahead…so much so that I might just skip regular decorations and go straight for the holiday stuff! 

I’m excited to get the ball rolling on September, so I thought I’d share a few goals I have for this month:

  1. Work out my closet organization – yes, I still have a bedroom as a closet in this house. I’m a lucky girl.
  2. Get the kitchen unpacked and squared away.
  3. Unpack most of the major boxes.
  4. Host a garage sale (or make a gigantic donation to charity).
  5. Hang at least 5 things on the walls – I’m chomping at the bits on this one!
  6. Begin using our master bathroom instead of the hall bath.
  7. Settle on living room furniture placement.
  8. Purchase at least one new shower curtain – This has been tough….everything I’ve fallen in love with has been $60-$150. Like this one. And this one. Swoon.
  9. And decide if I’ll be “ready” enough to host a Halloween party.


From the looks of this list, I better get busy! September is going to be fantastic!

2014 Goals Review – February

January GoalsWe have one month of this new year behind us. I want to try to reflect upon my 2014 goals at the beginning of each month. That should help keep me working towards them right?? I shared them here so you’ll would help hold me accountable. I want to hear how you’re progressing towards your goals, so please leave me a comment below. I love, love, love encouraging people, so I’ll be more than happy to send some positive thoughts your way.

So, here’s my progress so far:

  • exercise more: I have been exercising fairly regularly, but not quite as much as I’d like. The abnormally cold weather here lately has made it a little tough, but I’m trying to not use that as an excuse.
  • obtain an organized house: I have seen a little progress here too, but also not as much as I’d like. I have made a list of most of the problem areas and plan to start tackling them one by one. I think I’m going to do a version of the 40 Bags/40 Days project, but I’ll talk more about that later. Overall, I’ve been happy with the cleanliness of my home lately. For example, there is currently no dirty dishes in the sink or clothes to be folded. You can also see the floor of my dressing room…this is progress folks!
  • blog at least twice a week: I haven’t quite met the twice a week goal just yet, but I did make 4 posts during the month of January. As I see it, that’s about half way to my goal, and since it’s progress, I’m satisfied. 
  • try yoga: I have tried yoga and done it 4-5 times so far. I have liked the results and plan on trying a slightly harder routine today.
  • finish decorating: I have done little things here and there to move towards a home that I love. There haven’t been any major breakthroughs, but I’m certainly finding more inspiration and wrapping my head around what I’d like to see done. If nothing else, I’ve been pinning lots of things I like!
  • start and maintain a Project Life album: I have started a Project Life album for this year, but I’ll be completely honest…I’ve only completed the title page (and there was a spelling error…gasp!). I have worked very hard on a system that works for me to print photos and failed miserably. I think I’ve found a solution though, so I’ll try it sometime this week.
  • create books for our last two years: This is a pretty daunting task, but I’ve made quite a bit of progress. So far, I have gathered all of the photos from 2012 and 2013 and printed them. They arrived a week or so ago, so I can’t wait to get started with putting them in the books. I should also mention that I got a killer deal on printing those. It only cost me $10 to have 160+ photos printed and delivered. Score!
  • update our travel journal: I’ve done nothing to work towards this goal. Oops…better get on it!
  • dedicate more time to things I enjoy: I have been rather focused on this goal. It could possibly be the most important one to me. While I haven’t reserved a ton of time for myself, I have been very conscious about little rewards like taking time to enjoy my coffee or moving a little slower through the day. I still need more work in this department, but I’ve definitely seen (and felt) progress.
  • say more nice things: My original goal was to say something especially nice at least once a day. I can’t say that I’ve done it on a daily basis, but I’ve certainly been making a point to do it regularly. I find myself complimenting strangers more, as well as offering positivity to the people around me. The most important take away from this goal so far is that while I hope it’s made a difference to those around me, it’s also made a tremendous difference to me personally. I feel like a better person after I make a point to say something nice, and I plan to keep it up.
  • wake up earlier: This is a killer. It’s like the black sheep of my goal list. During mine and Amanda’s first goal review meeting, she suggested that I try to just this just once a week at first, then add subsequent days. That was huge for me because it helped me not feel guilty if I didn’t reach this goal every single day. All in all, I feel pretty satisfied with my progress. I’m getting up earlier than usual at least once a week, and I’ve gotten up early enough to have some quiet time before work on several occasions.

All things considered, I feel like I’m moving along nicely, and I plan to make lots of headway in February. (If you missed it, my “one little word” for February is determined.)  I think I’ll make these goals review posts at the end of each month to keep myself focused. There is no better accountability than having to share what you’ve done to accomplish them with the world!
